The Journey

Angelo Mockie did his undergraduate studies in Drama and Theatre and holds a Master’s Degree in Higher Education Studies, with the focus on Higher Education Transformation through the Performing Arts.


He ran a production company called “FAT productions” since 2005, but only made his debut as writer/director at the 2006 Volksblad Arts festival with his musical production Lekke Ekke. From then on, he featured in various professional productions as actor, director, musical director, musician and choreographer.


Some of the highlights of his professional career includes, travelling to Rwanda and Egypt as dancer for the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State; Directing “Rocking @ Heaven’s gates”, “Ja Jy Kan” and “Voetspore” for the Volksblad Arts Festival; Songwriter and musical director for “Sindiswa” at the Volksblad Arts Festival”; Acting in the musical “Fantastics” directed by Pieter Taljaard; Song writer, musical director and co-choreographer for the “Reitz 4-production” in Bloemfontein and State College, Pennsylvania, USA; Actor in Zakes Mda’s “We shall sing for the Fatherland” produced by the performing Arts Centre of the Free State


He also directed the Fiesta award winning production “Te veel vir ‘n Colored Girl”; produced and acted in RENT the Broadway musical, directed the Broadway musical FAME (both staged at the Performing Arts Centre of the Free State), Athol Fugard’s My Children My Africa, John Kani and Barney Simon’s Lion and the Lamb, music director for both Sibongile Khumalo (a Performing Arts Centre of the Free State Production) and PJ Powers (a Free State Arts Festival Production).


A highlight of his session drumming career is working on the musical production The Distant Drum, the story of Nat Nakasa featuring European violinist Daniel Hope, directed by Jerry Mofokeng.


Angelo served on the Free State Arts Festival Board for two years, and was co-artistic director for the Free State Arts Festival Fringe program. He also served on KykNet’s Fiesta Awards Panel.
